Adobe is free to download and has an in built search engine.

Document scanning can scan your documents to make them fully word searchable for typed text only, using our Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process. When used in conjunction with Adobe Reader, this allows you to perform a word search within a file or your complete network.
This process reduces the need for complex indexing or book marking of files.
Adobe Reader 7 which is free to download from the adobe website, allows you to view your electronic archive and perform word searches within archives for documents that have had OCR applied.
